August 30th Warner Valley Campground to Carter Creek

A milestone today as I passed the PCT midpoint. It's now closer to the end than it is to the beginning. Each day brings me closer to reaching my goal. Also the first day in a long time that I was completely alone on the trail. Didn't see anybody. The fact is that with the northbound hikers having already passed and the kids back in school cause summer holiday is over, being out here alone will become the norm. One of the things you've got to face up to and deal with as a solo southbound hiker. Highlights today were from the southern part of Lassen Volcanic National Park with its geothermal feature of Boiling Springs Lake, its mud pots bubbling and super heated water blowing steam into the sky. A few miles further, off a short side trail, is Terminal Geyser, which sounds like an old steam engine pulling into the station. For those who've been to Yellowstone and have visions of Old Faithful, you'll surely be disappointed. However, lower your expectations a bit and I'm sure you'll find it worth the short detour. Camped at the trail junction to Carter Creek. First thing I'll do tomorrow morning is go and refill my water containers. This must be a popular place to camp as there is a large circle of sticks and stones intricately arranged at the side of the trail and H2O in large letters in the middle of the trail leading to the creek. Lots of flat spaces amidst the scattered trees to pitch a tent or lay a groundcloth.
